Court System

  1. The Probate Courts handle cases involving juveniles, seniors, and people with mental illnesses. This court tries to provide an easy way for families to solve their issues.
  2. The Superior Courts are divided into four divisions: the civil, criminal, family, and juvenile divisions. The Civil Division hears small claims cases, landlord/tenant cases, administrative appeals, civil cases involving a jury and civil cases with no jury. The Criminal Division handles felonies punishable by prison sentences of more than a year, misdemeanors punishable by prison sentences of less than a year, motor vehicle violations, and infractions where a fine may be paid by mail. The Family Division deals with cases including divorce, child custody, child support, juvenile delinquency, child abuse and neglect, and termination of parental rights. Lastly, the Juvenile Division hears cases including delinquency, a neglected or uncared for child, families with service needs, and termination of parental rights.
  3. The Appellate Court is the intermediate appellate court of Connecticut and it hears appeals from the Connecticut Superior Court.
  4. The Supreme Court is the court of last resort and has mandatory jurisdiction over civil and criminal appeals as well as judicial discipline matters and capital criminal appeals. They have discretionary jurisdiction over civil appeals, non-capital criminal appeals, and administrative agency cases.
