Court System

  1. The Joint Committee on Judicial Administration makes all of the policies and procedure rules for the District of Columbia courts.
  2. The Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in the District of Columbia. They handle all local trial matters, including civil, criminal, family court, probate, tax, landlord-tenant, small claims and traffic cases. This court includes many divisions including, the civil division, the criminal division, the domestic violence unit, the family court, the probate division, and the tax division.
  3. The Court of Appeals is the highest court in the District of Columbia. The Courts authorization allows them to review all final orders, and judgments. This court also has jurisdiction to review decisions of administrative agencies, boards, and commissions of the government. Within this court are certain divisions like the administrative division, the case management division, and the office of admissions.
