Court System

  • The Justice of the Peace Court has jurisdiction over civil cases where the disputed amount is less than $15,000 and in criminal cases including certain misdemeanors and motor vehicle cases.
  • The Court of Common Pleas has jurisdiction in civil cases where the disputed amount is less than $50,000 and they handle all misdemeanors, except for drug-related offenses or traffic offenses. They also hold preliminary hearings in felony cases.
  • The Family Court has extensive jurisdiction in all family and juvenile matters.
